The Victorians loved Valentines day. In fact, you could say they loved most holidays and they went all out to celebrate them. In addition to sending sweet and sentimental Valentine's Day card and postcards, the Victorians also loved to send what is known as Vinegar Valentines.
Vinegar Valentines could be cards or postcards and they usually featured a caricature and an insulting little poem about the recipient and the type of person they were. It was meant in good fun and is sort of similar to the humorous greeting cards that are so popular today.
